Plumbing for Duplexes, Triplexes and Fourplexes
The short answer
In a small multi-unit building, two to four units may share one sewer line and sometimes one water service. A backup in that line affects every unit, so diagnosis usually starts at the shared line. We work with owner-occupants and landlords on the repair and the approvals.
Shared lines
When more than one unit backs up at once, the problem is usually in the shared line. A camera inspection from the cleanout shows the condition of that line and where the stoppage sits.
Access
- We may need to reach the cleanout, the water heaters and the basement for every unit.
- If tenants live there, arrange access and any notice the lease requires before the visit.
Water heaters
Each unit may have its own water heater. A standard 40-gallon atmospheric gas replacement has a published starting price when it's readily accessible.
Approvals
We explain what we found and what it will take before work starts. If we find something different once the work is underway, we explain what changed and get approval before any added work proceeds.
