How To Know If Your Home Has Lead Water Pipes

Lead contamination in drinking water poses a significant health risk, especially to young children and pregnant women. It can lead to developmental issues, neurological damage, and a host of other serious health problems. Your family’s safety could be at risk if your home is equipped with lead water pipes, a common issue in older constructions. As your go-to local plumber in Columbus, OH, Drain Master explores how you can identify lead pipes in your home.

Understand the Age of Your Property

Many older homes, typically those built before 1986, are more likely to have lead pipes or lead solder connecting the pipes. If your home falls within this age range, it’s crucial to let your plumbing company assess your plumbing system for potential lead contamination. Even if you believe the pipes in your property have been replaced, there is still a possibility that some lead pipes remain.

Conduct a Visual Inspection

Examine the pipes accessible to you, such as those in basements, crawl spaces, or utility rooms. Lead pipes are typically dull gray in color and have a soft, malleable texture. If you can safely access a small section, use a coin or screwdriver to gently scratch the surface of the pipe. If the metal is easily damaged or reveals a silver-gray color underneath, there is a high chance that it contains lead.

Test Your Water

One of the most reliable ways to determine if your home has lead pipes is by testing your water. You can purchase a lead water testing kit from your local hardware store or contact professional plumbing services for assistance. The test involves collecting a sample of water from each faucet in your home and sending it to a laboratory for analysis.

Consulting Your Water Utility

Many water providers maintain records of the types of pipes used in their service areas. They may be able to tell you if your home is connected to a lead service line or if lead pipes were commonly used during your house’s construction era.

According to an Environmental Protection Agency survey conducted in 2023, over 9 million lead pipes carry water into homes across the United States. Columbus, OH is a city known for its charming, historic homes, making it even more crucial for homeowners to be aware of the potential presence of lead pipes in their properties. If you suspect that your home may have lead pipes, it’s essential to take action immediately to protect yourself and your family.

What To Do?

Some water filtration systems can effectively reduce lead from your drinking water. However, the most effective and permanent solution is to replace all lead pipes with a safer alternative, such as copper or plastic pipes. Consult your plumber and let them provide a plan for the plumbing repairs or replacements needed to ensure the safety of your water supply.
